This is one of our youngest lads, Jack Taylor.
He asked me this question when we arrived on site last week, assuming he would just wait at the bottom of the rope to be told when to pull the tools up.
We all have to start somewhere but unless someone takes the time to explain why we are doing what we are doing, Jack may never progress.
I’ve now taken this approach with 6 of our youngest employees and the reaction has been empowering.
As well as time on site I’ve made time away from work to explain where I think they are at and what they need to do to quite literally climb the ladder.
Overall, I’ve found that as well as developing their skill set, the lads take more pride in their appearance now, they are more punctual and feel more confident to chip in with ideas, highlight problems and keep me up to date with what they’ve been up to.
